Commuters can now expect the Andheri-Goregaon extension on the Harbour line to start functioning soon, as the final speed trials conducted on the new tracks by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), on Tuesday, were successful. Speaking to mid-day, Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager, Western Railway, said, “The trials were successful and there were no issues at all.” The trials which started with physical inspection of the tracks, was followed by Electrical Multiple Unit local train runs at a speed of 100km/hour on both the up and down lines.

When asked about the opening of the line, railway officials said that they were yet to receive a communication from the CRS regarding it. Once the Western Railway headquarters receives an official sanction, a date for opening the line would be finalized and communicated with the Mumbai division. However, sources said that if all goes well, then the line would become operational before the end of February.
For benefit of commuters
The Andheri-Goregaon extension on the Harbour line is a part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) II. The first trials for it were conducted in December. Sources said that about five to seven lakh commuters would benefit from the extension daily, and it would also help decongest other stations like Andheri and Vile Parle. The Goregaon Harbour Terminus would become functional once the trains start operating, the sources added.
