It has come as a rude shock for college principals in the city.
The University Grant Commission's (UGC) proposal to restrict the term of college principals to five years and prohibit them from taking the post thereafter has been met with angry response.

T Shiware, who has been the principal of KPB Hinduja College in Charni Road for the last seven years, said, "It's shocking that we can be principals only for five years.
What will a principal do after his term ends? No professor would want to become a principal if such a proposal goes through."

The principal of MMK College of Commerce and Economics in Bandra, A Vanjani, echoed Shiware's views.

"If at all such a proposal becomes a regulation, it will not go down well with the educational institutes.

It will be difficult to start teaching again for a principal after his tenure ends. The UGC should think twice before making such a regulation."
Vanjani has been principal since 2008 and feels the proposal will lead to a mess among the teaching fraternity.
The principals are holding meetings to dissuade the UGC from taking such a decision.
Out of the 560 colleges in Mumbai, only 130 have qualified principals appointed by the Mumbai University.
