A student of Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSAR), Shivani Rana (18), allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in the institute's hostel on Tuesday. Reportedly, before taking the extreme step, Shivani had called up her friend around 3:30 pm, telling her she was depressed and might end her life.

She then switched off her cellphone. Shivani was a first-year student of diploma course in pharmacy at DIPSAR. A police officer said they will contact the friend, whose name they refused to divulge, and try to gather more information.

The discovery
Hostel warden Manju Vyas was the first to discover the incident. She had gone to call Shivani for the evening tea when she found the door locked from inside. She knocked several times but when no one answered, she got suspicious and called other institute officials. The door was broken down and Shivani was found hanging from the ceiling.

DIPSAR director Shreeniwasan Aggarwal said Shivani was staying in room number C-14, second floor. The hostel authorities then called the police around 7 pm to report the suicide. Her body was rushed to AIIMS mortuary for post-mortem.

'Father, we're safe'
Shivani took the extreme step the same day she returned from her hometown, Bagpat in UP, after celebrating Diwali. Ramesh, her uncle, alleged she was murdered as the hostel room was found ransacked. The police, however, called the allegation fictitious.

A suicide note, addressed to the father of the deceased Prem Pal Singh, was found. The note read, "Father, don't worry we are safe." The official said she was staying in the hostel along with two other girls. "Both girls had left for home for Diwali and are yet to return," said the police officer.
