A female teacher at a convent school in Mira Road publicly accused the Std IX student of an affair with a male teacher; the girl’s complaint to school authorities fell on deaf ears
Going against the grain of their profession, teachers at a convent school in Mira Road allegedly drove a Std IX student to attempting suicide by humiliating her and alleging that she had an affair with a male teacher.
Police officials said that, last week, a female teacher had accused the girl of having a long-standing affair with a male teacher. Humiliated at the false allegation being made in front of other teachers and her classmates, the girl went to the principal to complain.

Instead of acting on her complaint, however, the school’s senior management and teachers scolded her and said she was guilty. Word of this spread in the school and several classmates teased and humiliated her, sending her into a depression. On Friday, when she was alone at home, the girl attempted suicide by drinking phenyl.
She was discovered in the nick of time and taken to a private hospital in Mira Road. Officials said the girl is shocked and in bad shape. They said she was scolded by teachers and her mother very often.
A case was registered against five teachers yesterday. Senior police inspector Anil Kadam from Kashimira police station said, “We have registered a case against five teachers for assault and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
No attempt to suicide case has been registered yet. Arrests will be made only af-ter a thorough probe into the case as it is a very sensitive matter.” The school management could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
