Her latest song Fevicol se is making waves and needless to point out, it's an item number. However, to her credit, Mamta Sharma has no qualms at being referred to as an item singer.

I for item, S for songs

After all, all her songs — be it Munni Badnaam Hui, Pritam Pyaare or Anarkali Disco Chali — turned out to be chartbusters. Currently dubbing for Pritish Chakraborty's upcoming film, the self-trained crooner is thrilled at the way people have received her work. In a freewheeling chat with CS, the Gwalior-born Mamta talks about music, life, films and a lot more:

Yehi hai right choice, baby!
A singer agrees to a song only after he/she likes it. It's like an unwritten prerequisite for an artiste. The same is true about me. I love all the songs I've sung so far. They are numbers for masses and people adore such tracks. I can never sit and calculate whether a particular song is going to be a hit or not; or whether everybody is going to like it or not. That's for the public to decide. And when a song doesn't click, it feels bad.

It’s vox populi
I find it quite amusing when critics label songs as vulgar when in reality they aren't. They are plain funny. Or else, they won't be as popular as they are today. There used to be songs from older days which were quirky but they had the aesthetics. Similarly, item songs today are loaded with entertainment factor. Yes, words that were once considered taboo are being embraced, but I see it as a positive sign. Besides, even the kids and naani-daadis enjoy item songs. They are played at weddings which are family functions, aren’t they?

Switching act
It'd be too early for me to test myself with other genres of songs. The very fact that music directors like Lalit Pandit, Anu Malik, Anand Raj Anand and Sajid-Wajid remember me for an item song is nothing less than a gesture of appreciation. Having said that, I'll love to try something different with other music directors too.

Same ol' life
My life literally changed after Munni Badnaam Hui but I'm still the same old person I was two years ago. I lead a casual life and I go out as before. I still bargain with the bhaajiwallahs (laughs). Just that people recognise me on streets although most of them don't even know my name but they are like 'Aap ko kahi dekha hai?' and I inform them it must be on some TV show!u00a0
