Indian girls win bronze at Hockey World Cup in Germany

India defeated England 3-2 (1-1) on penalties to win their first ever bronze medal in the Junior Women's Hockey World Cup yesterday.

Rani got India off the mark with a field goal in the 13th minute with the scoreline remaining unchanged till the break. In the second half, England came back through Anna Toman who levelled the scores with a 55th minute field goal. The score was 1-1 at full-time which led to a penalty shootout.

Anna, who brought England back into the match, took the first shot at the goal but missed while India’s Rani came out on top again by scoring and giving India a 1-0 lead.

Following that, India kept the lead for the next six shots as all the players — Navneet Kaur, Vandana Katariya, Navjot Kaur for India and Lucy Hyams, Shona McCallin, Jo Leigh of England — missed their shots.

Finally, Emily Defroand levelled the score (1-1) for England which was followed by Poonam Rani's miss leading to sudden death.

Rani came to India's rescue once more when she scored to give India a 2-1 lead. Emily made it 2-2 for England. Poonam Rani and Shona McCallin then missed their respective strokes.

In the end, Navneet Kaur maintained her calm to give India a 3-2 lead and England's Anna missed her stroke to give India its first medal in this category.u00a0
