The Player Retention for Indian Premier League's 11th edition may have come as a shocker for many big names in Indian cricket. While Virat Kohli (RCB), MS Dhoni (CSK), Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) and David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad) were expectedly retained, several other big names were not on the franchisees' favoured list any more. Yuvraj Singh, once the highest IPL earner, was not retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who kept Warner and Bhuvneshwar Kumar instead.

Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh were not among the top three for Mumbai Indians either. The likes of Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum, Faf du Plessis and Gautam Gambhir did not fit into the scheme of things of their respective franchises. "A large part of the planning revolved around finances and various other factors," said Venky Mysore, chief executive of Kolkata Knight Riders.
