As fans point out glaring similarities, sources claim Bhatt's Spotlight 2 protagonist not aligned to Yo Yo Honey Singh
Vikram Bhatt
With the first season of his web show, Spotlight, behind him, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt has turned his attention to the second instalment. Touted to be India's first digital musical series, the show's second season will chart the trajectory of its protagonist's career and stormy romance. While Bhatt maintains that his shows are based on fictional characters — part one was rumoured to be inspired by Kangana Ranaut's life — speculations have been rife that this new outing is inspired by rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. Social media users say the recently unveiled teaser has given credence to their assumption.

A source says that Bhatt's show revolves around a small-town musician, played by Karan V Grover, who rises to fame, but struggles to take charge of his life. "The protagonist, Vicky Verma, is a star singer, who is on the verge of career-suicide. His arrogance, addiction and public stunts land him in trouble. Caring little for criticism, Vicky loses both, his stardom and contract with his recording label," says the source.
The source adds that attaching Singh's name to the project could invite "undue controversy". "The man [Singh] is active in the industry, and his family would not have consented to a show like this one." Singh recently came under the spotlight for his revelation of suffering from bipolar disorder, even attributing his 18-month-long absence from the industry to it. The source, however, says Bhatt's Spotlight will see the protagonist fall apart, not due to a disease, but in fact because of his choices. "It is speculated that he struggles with drug abuse and intoxication." We reached out to Bhatt, but he remained unavailable for a comment.
