Christmas is Christmas in any language, especially the language of music. A clutch of singers and musicians have come out with a full-fledged CD of East Indian Christmas Carols, sung in East Indian Marathi. Says Crompton Texeira, one of the singers and prime mover behind the CD called Natal, “Nobody, I think has done an entire collection of carols in East Indian Marathi.

There have been songs or two, sung in the language but we decided to do an entire collection, it has appeal to East Indians of course, but other Maharashtrians too.”
Several carols on the CD are translations from popular carols like Silent Night, Holy Night. Crompton adds, “Most of these singers are English carol singers but they are East Indians, so were happy to be given the opportunity to sing in the language.
This is one small way in which to keep the East Indian tradition alive. After all, the linguistic medium is an important one through which certain cultural values and a slice of history can be preserved.”

Marines are simply softies at heart
So now that ‘tis the time for giving and forgiving, the tough guy US Marines are going to show their soft side with a Toys for Tots US Marine initiative today afternoon at the US Consulate at Bandra Kurla Complex.
No haas-les: Peter Haas, Consul General of the US in Mumbai will be present to lend support to the event
In association with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) called Bookwallah Organization, the Marines are set to play host to 40 underprivileged children at the Consulate. The US Marines, dressed in uniform, will interact and mingle with the kids presenting them with gifts and books and reading to them too.
With this, the Marines are continuing a ‘Toys for Tots’ tradition founded in 1947 by a group of Marine reservists. The program serves underprivileged children across the United States and around the world, while Bookwallah’s mission is to collect and distribute children’s storybooks, set up libraries, and spread the joy of reading to children of orphanages and children’s homes throughout the world.
