Police say accused wanted to get back at brother-in-law for dowry case against him
Twou00a0daysu00a0after a bomb hoax call to the IT company IBM, the police arrested a civil engineer who they said made the call from a number in his brother-in-law's name with the intention of implicating him in the case.
The police said the accused wanted to get back at his brother-in-law, a contractual employee at IBM, because he had lodged a dowry harassment case against him recently.
On the morning of November 13, the reception staff at IBM received a call from a mobile phone warning them of a bomb planted on the premises. The caller disconnected immediately after saying the bomb would go off in two hours.
Police officials said the IBM staff informed the authorities and the premises were evacuated. The bomb detection squad was also pressed into service.
SIM card purchase
"As the call turned out to be hoax, we began investigations and obtained the mobile number through the caller ID system. The number was registered in the name of Syed Nazeer Ahmed, a contractual employee working at IBM," the official said.
The inquiry did not yield anything, but the police found that the mobile phone Nazeer was actually using was different from the number the call was made from. This led the police to the shop from where the SIM card was purchased. On questioning, the shopkeeper said it was not Nazeer, but some other person who had purchased the SIM claiming to be Nazeer.
u00a0Based on the description of the purchaser, Nazeeer told the police he suspected it to be his brother-in-law, Khalid, who was not on good terms with him.
Family dispute
The police said Khalid was married to Nazeer's sister and was facing a dowry harassment case registered by her family.
Though it was a love marriage, Khalid allegedly had begun to harass Nazeer's sister for more dowry. Fed up, she had filed a dowry harassment case against Khalid and his family, which is pending in court.
Enraged by this, Khalid vowed to take revenge and cooked up the bomb hoax plan. He purchased a SIM card in the name of Nazeer and also gave fake documents of Nazeer's office address.
The police are investigating further.
"We cannot comment till the investigations are over," Deputy Commissioner of Police BNS Reddy said.
