Manipuri woman's molester arrested in Bengaluru

A day after an FIR was registered in the molestation case of a 26-year-old Manipuri woman, who was assaulted in Vakola on Saturday, the accused was detained in Bangalore yesterday.


Joint commissioner of police (Law & Order) Deven Bharti confirmed that the accused has been detained and will be brought to Mumbai soon. The man had allegedly molested and assaulted the woman in broad daylight in Vakola on Saturday. The police succeeded in identifying the accused and confirmed his identity after showing his photo to the woman. Cops learnt he was in Bangalore when they inquired his relatives in Mumbai.

On Wednesday, an FIR was registered in the case after mid-day carried a front-page report on the indifference displayed by a police officer at the Vakola police station when the woman came to register an FIR the first time. The Vakola division of the ACP is also conducting an enquiry to find out if there was any negligence on the police’s part.The FIR was registered under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult) of the Indian Penal Code.

‘Don’t go by their claims’
Earlier, the girl and people from her community were informed by the police that the family of the accused claimed he is mentally disturbed.

Bramhdev Atkari, state co-ordinator of the NGO ‘My Home India’ that fights for the rights of people from the North East, said, “Why is the police going by the family’s claims instead of arresting him?” He added that the police should nab the culprit and get him medically examined to ascertain if he is mentally ill.
