Meant for malamals

Drop by at this newly-opened store if you're tempted to add a few summer dresses to your wardrobe. The guide's advice: Keep a close eye on the price tag

Finding your way to Malmal is a wee bit tough since the store is camouflaged by gola stalls on the adjoining pavement, even as hawkers peddle their wares on the bustling Linking Road.

Ambience: Step in and the store strikes you as casual and welcoming though a tad cluttered. In a mad clash of colours, the ceiling is draped in yellow fabric; look around and you have rows of clothes hanging from hangers, while a collection of shoes sit tight on bright orange-coloured stools. We liked the display of accessories, especially the floral hair clips clasped onto wires emerging from a bottle, making it resemble a flower vase.

What's in store: Step into this store, only if you are not obsessed with black and white. It stocks a cheerful mix of dresses, kurtas, skirts, churidars and jumpsuits, bags, shoes and belts. Most of the products are made in-house, so you can customise garments and accessories after choosing the fabric and design.

Owned by Aleena Jetha, also the proprietor of Mudd Spa, the store stocks eye pillows stuffed with aromatic scents and sand, and therapeutic creams. If you're looking for value-for-money combos, the store offers spa vouchers with purchases worth Rs 1,000 and above.

We liked: Most of the garments are made from cotton, hence the name Malmal. The owner feels this fabric best suits Mumbai's muggy weather. We liked the swinging sixties-inspired felt and fabric floral accessories u2014 broaches (Rs 150 onwards), rubber bands (Rs 300 onwards), hair clips (Rs 375 onwards), double clips (Rs 475) and flower hairband-cum-neckpieces (Rs 150).

The dampener: The price tags on clothes and accessories are unreasonable. Specially since some of it isn't even designer wear!

At: Malmal Boutique, Maleagrina building, ground floor, before KFC, diagonally opposite McDonald's, Linking Road.
