Ashim Ahluwalia's movie 'Daddy' is a period drama. For him, it was not easy to create that particular period.

During an interview with mid-day.com, Ashim says that the story is from the '70s and how now everything has changed. Ashim says, "Now we have mostly used real locations for shooting. Even then it was difficult to bring that feel. Since the buildings in Mumbai have changed a lot, interiors have changed, that's why we have recreated many things in the film. By watching old movies, we learnt that this wallpaper used to be here. We recreated it in the same manner. We have used several photos. We got a lot of help from Gawli's family."

Ashim further adds, "The restaurants have changed. Even if old restaurants still exist, they have been renovated with granite. That period is very difficult to feel. Not only this, while making 'Daddy', I had a hard time choosing clothes for all the characters. That's why it is difficult to create an authentic period drama in India as you don't get the exact things. During that time, there used to be sarees with typical prints. I was tired of trying to find those types of sarees. But I could not find it. So it could have been created only digitally. It's impossible to get shirts with prints from the '70s now. But my costume designers worked very hard on this. They went to Nashik, Solapur and even to the interior parts of Maharashtra. We have also paid attention to the costumes of Rama Nayak and Babu Resham. Babu Resham used to wear a different type of t-shirt and tight pants. Actually, he was fat, but he used to think that he is slim. To show this, he used to wear cool tight t-shirts. Nowadays it is difficult to get those. But my department worked very hard. Even the guns of that period are not available anymore. And then the budget shoots up in recreating this. But Arjun never said no to me."

Ashim explains that in 'Daddy', he has cast many non-actors. The residents of the 'chawl' have also been included in the film. "Because of this, the budget could be managed," says Ashim.

Ashim believes that filmy biopics are made in Bollywood. He says people just glorify everything. He says that audience won't find his films fake. According to Ashim, this will be the speciality of his film. Ashim also accepts that he can't make typical Bollywood films. So he considers himself as a misfit.

'Daddy' will release on September 8. It is based on the life of gangster Arun Gawli.
