The deceased has been identified as Maheshchandra Indra Baafna (69), the owner of Chaya mattress shop in Khar. Baafna stayed near the godown at Shakuntala Apartment with his daughter and wife. He also has a son, Bharat, who stays in a separate house.

Police said that Baafna asked his employees to close down the shop on Sunday, as he had to rush to Jogeshwari to meet a doctor. The workers did as they were told, and informed Baafna’s son and daughter of his plan. However, the man never returned home.

After waiting all night, the family set out to search for him at dawn. They called the doctor in Jogeshwari, and were shocked to know that Baafna never met him. Finally, they went to his godown and found the shutter open. They found Baafna lying in a pool of blood.

Sources at Khar police station revealed that, the businessman’s son, Bharat, said, in his statement, that his father was also a moneylender. The 69-year-old’s mobile phone, some ornaments, and the objects stored inside a locker are missing from the murder scene. Bharat suspects someone called his father to the godown and killed him, cops said.

“We are investigating the matter from various angles — including property disputes and robbery. Family members, business colleagues and people whom he lent money to, are under suspicion,” said an officer investigating the case. He further added that there is no watchman or a CCTV camera on the premises where he was found murdered.
