This robber bit off more than he could chew when he tried to escape in the victims’ car. The two, who had initially been scared into a shock, recovered their bearings and successfully chased him down, to not only get their vehicle and belongings back, but also get him arrested.

The incident happened in Tilak Nagar on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road yesterday.

Dinner drama
Mohammed Sayyad Shafiq Sayyad (35), a resident of Shivaji Nagar and an Internet service provider, was at dinner with his friend Nasim Khan (26) at Udipi Bar. After finishing, they came out of the eatery and stood chatting, when a man approached them and demanded all their possessions. Scared, Sayyad gave away his money and mobile phone, and just as the robber was leaving, handed over the keys to his car to Khan while emptying his pocket. The robber then demanded the keys as well and Khan handed them over.

As the robber ran towards the car and got in to make his escape, something probably snapped in the two and they decided to fight him out. They started chasing him on foot, seeing which he accelerated. After running for almost two kilometres, Khan hailed an autorickshaw and they continued chasing him. And at Bainganwadi signal it all unraveled.

Escape foiled
The accused’s desperate attempt to reach Mankhurd and take the Sion-Panvel Highway to get out of the city limit failed as, in his panic, he hit the divider at the signal.

The two reached and tried to overpower him but were attacked with a chopper. Witnessing the commotion, passers-by ran to help. They nabbed the robber and handed him over to the Deonar police, who transferred the case to the Tilak Nagar police, as it happened in their jurisdiction.

Senior Inspector Vijay Khaire said, “We have arrested Abdul Majid Mohammed Sheikh (42) under IPC sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 397 (robbery or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 427 (mischief causing damage). A history-sheeter, he is a resident of Bandra and often visits Shivaji Nagar.”
