The incident took place at Eastern Express Highway near Sion around 10.45 am yesterday. Valekar was riding pillion on a bike, which was hit by a dumper. The teenager was rushed to Sion Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Valekar, the son of a painter, was a resident of Milind Nagar, Bhandup. A regular at the rally organised by Milind Tarun Mandal since the past three years, he had joined this year’s proceedings at 9.15 am. Advocate Subhas Wakode, a member of the mandal, said, “Initially, we did not want Aditya to come along, we even got him to get down from the bike thrice, but he started crying. We had to take him along.”

The incident occurred when members of the Milind Tarun Mandal were on their way to Chaitya Bhoomi at Dadar on a contingent of 35 bikes to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti. A speeding dumper rammed into the bike carrying Valekar. The bike’s rider Gajanan Dabade (29) injured his left hand and Valekar slipped and came under the dumper.

Dabade, the bike rider said, “We were moving towards Dadar and the dumper was speeding towards us. When the dumper hit us, the bike skid and Aditya went under the dumper.” PSI Laxman Dagde from Sion police station said, “The driver has been booked for rash driving and causing death by negligence under IPC Sections 279 and 304 (A) and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.”

According to the FIR filed by Gajanan Dabade at the Sion police station, the driver of the truck (registration number MH.04.FU.6272) was heading towards them and lost control on the highway. The driver has been identified as Mohanlal Vishwakarma (25), a Madhya Pradesh driving licence holder. Vishwakarma has been remanded to police custody till Wednesday.
