A police vehicle was torched on Sunday evening near JNPT port after officials from Nhava Sheva police station tried to disrupt the truck drivers' strike near GTI company in JNPT premises

Mumbai: Police vehicle torched near JNPT port

A police vehicle was torched on Sunday evening near JNPT port after officials from Nhava Sheva police station tried to disrupt the truck drivers' strike near GTI company in JNPT premises.

The incident took place at around 4 pm on Sunday when hundreds of truck drivers lost their cool after the police officials tried to stop them from continuing the strike.

The drivers of container trucks were on strike from past three days due to increment issues. As a result of which container traffic was badly affected and trucks were lined up in the port area till Karal phata at JNPT.

The mob set the police jeep on fire and also injured a few officials. However, when contacted, Rajesh Devre, senior police inspector at Nhava Sheva police station said, "Our officials were trying to stop the strike as it had lead to heavy traffic snarls across the port area. However the mob of truck drivers got angry and started attacking officials. A police jeep was torched in the incident and no official was injured."

Officials have been deployed at the spot and the situation is under control, he added.
