The odds are not in their favour, the numbers and math don't add up, but the varsity remains confident that it will meet the July 31 deadline set by the Governor to declare the criminally long-pending results for the various streams.

Let's crunch some numbers. Just five days remain for the deadline with the total number of papers yet to be evaluated standing at 5,19,000. So, with around 5,396 professors on its roster, it has to attempt evaluating around a lakh answersheets a day, implying each teacher will have to ensure getting through at least 20 in a day.

However, teachers insist that with the glitches in the on-screen assessment system, it is hard to get through barely 10 answersheets a day, thus putting it squarely out of reach as an achievable goal.

Extraordinary measures
Following the brouhaha over the record-breaking delay, which has already cost several students a wasted year, the varsity had dedicated July 24-27 as only assessment work days. On Tuesday, the varsity went on to claim that it had managed to assess the highest number of answersheets on Tuesday - 1,07,792. However, professors still complained that on day one, technical issues hanged the system with the message, 'loading answer-sheets'.

"It is great the way teachers are taking the responsibility seriously. And this is only by professors from Mumbai University. We have planned to take help from Nagpur University, but their participation has not begun as yet," said Vinayak Dalvie, officer on special duty appointed for MU evaluation process. In another development, the university hiked the per paper remuneration for the professors from Rs 8 to Rs 18.

Opposing views
Leeladhar Bansod, PRO of the Mumbai University, said, "With the current rate of evaluation, we are confident that all results will be declared in the given time limit. In fact, 'Science and technology' subject results are 98 per cent completed. Now, the entire workforce is dedicated to declare the big results - BA, BCom, BSc, and different self-financed courses such as BMM, BMS, etc."

But, all is not hunky dory as a professor from one of the city colleges, alleges, "We are compelled to wait for full download and in some cases, we lose the work, so we have to redo, save and close again to retrieve the answersheet."
