Don Bosco (Matunga) striker Nathan Fernandes played through pain to help his team beat St Lawrence (Borivli) 3-0 in a rain-marred Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school U-16 Div I match at Azad Maidan yesterday

Nathan’s early goal (second minute) gave the Matunga School the upper hand as they dominated the encounter thereafter. However, Nathan was not a certainty to play as he had not completely recovered from an injury he suffered in his right hamstring last week.

Though the 14-year-old was keen on playing, he was not sure if coach Leslie Machado would allow it. “The injury still hurts but I don’t want to miss a single match for my school this year as it’s my last academic year. I was keen on playing and I’m grateful to Leslie sir for supporting me today,” said the Std X student, who scored his third goal in nine matches this season.

Quentin Britto doubled the lead for Don Bosco ni the second half, after which Vikrant Belwalkar made it 3-0 off a neatly executed free kick. Belwalkar was grateful to his coach too. “I usually don’t take free kicks but today Leslie sir saw me scoring a couple of goals during the pre-match practice and told me to take the free kicks in the match. I am glad to have lived up to coach’s expectations,” said the 15-year-old.u00a0
