Sunday afternoon was witness to the engagement between leading Sun Pharma founder and MD Dilip Shangvi's daughter Vidhi to Vivek, son of Ranjana and Shiv Salgaocar of the VM Salgaocar clan from Goa; a fortuitous coupling that was first heralded on this page, as was the fact that this betrothal relates the families of two of India's richest men, the aforementioned Shangvi and Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries — however tenuously — together through matrimony.

No surprises, then that guests who attended the event at the Marriot Sahar were struck by just how low key and understated the Shangvis really are. “No pomp, no bling, no unnecessary nakhra,” said one. “The Shangvi side was noted for its under-statedness and adherence to stolid middle class values while the Salgaocars — a glamorous modern business family were felicitated by their high profile friends and business associates,” said the source.

But best of all, we're informed, was the cuisine served on the occasion, with delicious Goan coastal fare on one side and equally delicious shudh Gujarati delicacies prepared by none other than the famous Tapan Bhai from Ahmedabad. And no, though Mukesh Ambani himself did not attend, the Ambanis were represented by Dipti and Ishita, wife and daughter of Raj Salgaocar, the groom's uncle.

The boy from Hisar
Balakrishnan Goenka (BK) the low key chairman of the $3 billion Welspun group, which he founded in the 1980s, has a big birthday coming up.

And to celebrate it along with his gravity-defying success (the group has interests in steel, energy, textiles and household goods and its founder has been an invited speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos), his pretty wife Dipali (who herself is an entrepreneur and has featured recently in an Asia's 50 Power Businesswomen List) and his two daughters will host a big celebration this week.

The bash will take place at a midtown hotel and the theme will be a vintage 'sixties' party. 'From dancing to Bollywood beats, to driving classic vintage cars here's to a man who is rustic chic with a desi twist' reads the invitation. Dipali who we spoke to, although circumspect about the details, said, “It's his journey from Hisar and he's done it all on his own.” Nice!

On the Sports field and off
By now images of newly-elected International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Nita Ambani distributing medals to women's 400m freestyle podium finishers at the Rio Games have carpet bombed media airwaves.

Ambani, who has shown a passion for promoting sports consciousness in India, became the first Indian woman to join the IOC last week when she was elected with the highest number of votes to the prestigious body.

This candid picture snapped with husband Mukesh and younger son Anant in Rio was shot before her official appointment and shows three of the wealthiest individuals in the country sporting their Olympics bells and ribbons with considerable glee.

Which just goes to prove that pride in sportsmanship is an equal opportunity factor and does not differentiate between the rich and the poor. And in this month of Olympian effort — thank God for that!

A Parsi Affair
Parsi New Year approaches and with it, can patra ni machhi and salli chicken be far behind? And this year to mark the occasion, there are not one but two Parsi-oriented food couples on the ready with the ladles.

Dilnaz and Farrokh Khambatta have sent out a colourfully illustrated and detailed mailer for three separate Navroze Mubarak options for all those yearning jardaloo salli chicken and mutton berry pulao: Lunch at Umame, a buffet dinner at the Café at the NCPA and a takeaway Parsi menu from Joss Catering Services.

Not to be outdone in the bharuchi akoori with bun pao stakes is columnist and writer Bachi Karkaria, who along with her non-Parsi daughter-in-law Akshata, are threatening to cook up an epic Parsi New Year feast for 10 days coinciding at AD Singh's Sodabottleopenerwalla's at BKC. So which 'lagan nu stew' will Mumbaikars opt for? Watch this space!

Senior citizens and social media
One more reason that senior citizens should be banned from using social media. Art aficionados, gallerists and patrons were somewhat startled when they saw this bewildering sentence on the FB timeline of a leading SoBo gallery owner yesterday: 'Khorshed please stay away for the Souzas and the Jogens!!' it read, with two ominous exclamation marks at the end. A threat or a plea? And who is the Khorshed referred to? Besides, why was Khorshed being urged to stay away 'for' Souzas and Jogens and not 'from' them?

Grammar Nazis regardless, the most charitable explanation of this conundrum is that the gallerist, a slightly absent minded middle-aged lady, had planned to send these words as a private message and ended up posting them instead, for all to see... Will the price of Jogen Chowdhurys and FN Souzas fall on account of this? Don't hold your breath, but as we were saying, perhaps senior citizens should be banned from using social media after all.
