Tintu Luka was a top contender to clinch the 800m women's final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium yesterday. But she finished sixth, leaving a 50,000-plus crowd disappointed. But legendary PT Usha, who has mentored Luka, felt her participation in this event was part of a larger picture.

"Even if she doesn't win a medal, it wouldn't make any difference. Our aim is the 2012 London Olympics," Usha had told MiD DAY two days before Luka's pet event.
Luka started off brilliantly.
In fact, she led the rest of the herd start to finish in the first lap. But in the second lap, the eventual winner, Kenya's Nancy Langat not only caught up with an out-of-steam Luka, she also overtook her and finished ahead of the pack to win gold. New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin clinched silver and Canada's Diane Cummins finished third.
