Chennai-based music band The Shakey Rays is the latest act to feature in The High Big Gigs. The two-year old outfit will make you groove to their R’n’B and Rock and Roll music this weekend.

The band is the brainchild of songwriter duo Dhruva Gautham and Vikram Kannan and includes Niranjan Swaminathan and Sheikh N Yerbouti Tu Musiq.

Reminiscing about their initial days, Kannan says, “Dhruva and I went to school together. Even in those days, we were into composing songs and penning lyrics. Around two years ago we decided to form the band. It was Dhruva’s idea to give this name to our band though there’s no special significance to the title. We felt it was striking and hence we zeroed in on this name.”

The band is inspired by several artistes and bands but believes in creating original compositions. So while it borrows its Rhythm and Blues touch from the sounds of Muddy Waters and James Brown, it is, equally influenced by the music of bands like the Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

“We have been performing covers of their classics along with our originals. But at the upcoming gig, we will surprise the audience with a few of our originals as well,” says Kannan. u00a0After releasing their first album Tunes From the Big Belly, the band is now planning to come up with a second album
as well.

The band is known for its creative songwriting which aptly represents the aggressive energy and attitude of Garage Rock and Punk music. Their live act is explosive and they have created a niche for themselves in the Indian indie circuit.

Kannan observes that they try to come up with new kind of music every month. “We keep on writing as well as releasing new singles and videos online. At this stage we don’t have any plans to compose music for Bollywood but we would consider it if something comes our way,” he states.
