McIlroy, who captured the British Open, put his approach just short of the green, 32 feet from the cup, then holed out from there to stand on eight-under for the championship.

The 25-year-old improved to three-under on the rain-hit second round, having answered a bogey at 12 with a 12-foot birdie putt at 13 and a 16-foot birdie putt at 15.

Sitting on six-under were Steve Stricker and Ryan Palmer, both on their back nine for the day, and afternoon starters Lee Westwood and Kevin Chappell. Henrik Stenson, Edoardo Molinari and Jim Furyk were on five-under. Tiger Woods is struggling to make the cut after opening on 74.
