India's star golfer Jeev Milkha Singh yesterday said that the Asian team's victory over a might European outfit in the Royal trophy in Brunei is a big boost for golfers in the continent

Jeev played a significant role in the win by beating Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez after which the Asian team won the play-off.

“The win is very important for Asian golf. It will give Asian players the confidence that that they can take on the best in the world. For Indians, it shows that top players are coming out of India. Indian players have played in the Royal Trophy in the past and it will help the game in India too,” Jeev told PTI in an interview.

Speaking of his win over Jimenez, Jeev said: “It was a do-or-die situation out there. I was one down after the 14th hole. On the 15th I got a birdie. On the 16th it was a good putt about 20-foot. On the 17th, I made a great birdie to go 1-up. On the final hole, I had to half it with Miguel or win it for the team to go into the playoff. It’s always good to do something for the team.”

After Jeev’s effort tied the match at 8-8, in the play-off, the Korean duo of K T Kim and Y E Yang beat Ryder Cup hero Nicolas Colsaerts and Francesco Molinari to win the title.
