S ward: Poor roads, traffic bottlenecks and garbage dumps remain largely unaddressed
On July 11, we had raised issues of traffic chaos, poor hygiene in slums and the rapid mushrooming of small factories in the 12.5-sqkm ward. The much-needed widening of the LBS Road is still nowhere in sight and the BMC is yet to crack down on unauthorised factories

On July 11, we had raised issues of traffic chaos, poor hygiene in slums and the rapid mushrooming of small factories in the 12.5-sqkm ward. The much-needed widening of the LBS Road is still nowhere in sight and the BMC is yet to crack down on unauthorised factories — the biggest contributor of pollution in the area. Slums’ access to clean drinking water and sanitation is also limited. Residents say piles of garbage are dumped and left to rot for days at Pannalal Silk Compound in Bhandup (West) as well as at Bhandup Industrial Estate, which is putting lives at risk.
Satish Wackchaure, Resident of Bhandup
Despite repeated complaints over garbage disposal at Pannalal Silk Mill Compound and Bhandup Industrial Estate, BMC hasn’t found a solution. Civic officials cleaned the sites over a month and a half ago.
Monisha Mahajan, Resident of Nahur
Nahur doesn’t get as inundated as before, but the problem of waterlogging persists. Also, streetlights on the road connecting to the station on the east are still defunct. We don’t feel safe taking that road in the dark.
Chanda Jadhav, Assistant municipal commissioner
We have set up garbage bins in all areas and our workers collect waste three times a day. We repaired roads prior to the monsoon. Repairs of footpaths are underway. Citizens can approach us if they face problems.
Mangesh Pawar, Bhandup village
We reduced waterlogging in Nahur, a problem that had persisted for 40 years, by constructing a box drain in the area. It has been proposed to widen storm water drains, but those living near nullahs are not ready to be rehabilitated.
Prakash Paddikal, President, Hillside Residents Welfare Association
Roads constructed only two years ago are in a deplorable condition. The widening of LBS Road is far from realised. Owing to this, commuters are forced to take the Eastern Express Highway.
Suresh Koparkar, Milind Nagar
I haven’t got any complaint of garbage being dumped at the Pannalal Silk Mill compound or we’d have taken action. There is a dearth of garbage bins. I’ve written to the BMC, asking for more dumpsters.
