Forty-five days after two men raped and killed a woman near Govandi railway station, cops arrest prime accused Arvind Deshmukh from Pune after recovering CCTV footage installed at the station
The Deonar police have arrested the prime accused in the rapeand murder of a 50-year-old woman last month. Arvind Baban Deshmukh was arrested up by the cops late on Friday. The police had earlier arrested Deepak Gaikwad (35) thanks to the footage they recovered from a CCTV installed at Govandi railway station.
According to the police, the incident occurred on August 30 when Deshmukh and Gaikwad allegedly entered the woman’s hutment at the Tata Nagar slums adjacent to the Govandi railway station. The accused apparently knew the woman and often visited her home. The woman used to lived alone and sold food at the railway station for a living.

On the day of the crime, the victim was allegedly drunk and unconscious when the accused raped her. Fearing she would lodge police complaint when she woke up they then hit her with iron rods, killing her on the spot. The accused then jumped over the station boundary wall and escaped. However, their escape was caught on CCTV, based on which several local residents identified the accused.
Gaikwad, who was picked up on Monday, was employed with state home guards till 2008. The duo, it transpired, lived off stealing scrap from railway property. “We now have both the accused in custody,” said Santosh Narute, the investigation officer.
