Top seed Kerber of Germany was down 6-1, 3-0 when she retired because of a viral illness. “I had no idea,” said Stephens, will battle for the title against Russian Elena Vesnina, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 winner over fifth-seeded Sara Errani of Italy. Stephens, with titles in Auckland and Acapulco already in 2016, had won just one match in five prior appearances on the green clay in Charleston.
Meanwhile in Houston, defending champion Jack Sock beat top-seeded John Isner 7-6, 6-3 on Saturday to reach the final of the ATP clay court tournament.
Sock vs Juan Monaco
America’s Sock, seeded fourth, will be trying to become the first player since Andy Roddick in 2001-02 to repeat as the Houston champion when he takes on Argentina’s Juan Monaco. Monaco beat third-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 6-2.
