Stray dog beaten to death, case in court

A criminal lawyer living in Rohini claims local goons brutally killed the stray canine she was taking care of following an argument

Anu Jain, 28, is a criminal lawyer by profession but she describes herself as an ardent dog lover. She feeds and takes care of street dogs near her residence in Rohini Sector 6. But last year her kindness towards stray dogs caused her a lot of heartache, ending with the brutal killing of a canine. The problems began on September 14 when the dog allegedly started barking at a girl.

Feeding the dogs: Anu Jain gives food to street dogs every day. Trouble
started after one of the canines barked at a girl in the locality.

"A person named Vishal came to my house the same day and started shouting at me. He said that the dog that was being fed by me had tried to bite the girl. He threatened me of dire consequences and the matter went to the local police. Some of the goons of the area supported him, though at the police station Vishal accepted his fault and wrote a letter of apology. But the goons of the area didn't like this. As I walked out of the police station three or four of them warned me," said Anu Jain, the complainant.

The goons allegedly threatened Anu and said that they would kill all the dogs she was taking care of.
"After that day I was constantly living in fear of the goons. On the night of September 18 I was outside my house, feeding the stray dogs. Suddenly a thug named Trilochan appeared with three more people. They had iron rods and hockey sticks in their hands. All of them started beating up one of the dogs. I tried to stop them but they chased me, so I had to get away. Next morning I tried to locate the dog,u00a0 but he was missing. Two days later on September 21 a neighbour told me that a dog was lying near her house. I discovered that it was the same dog; he was bleeding and was crying out furiously. I took him to Sanjay Gandhi Institute in Rajouri Garden. Doctors there said that they wouldn't be able to save him. Finally he died on September 24," she added.

The post mortem report said that the canine's pelvic bone was broken and he died out of internal bleeding. Anu filed a written complain at the local police station on 26th of September last year and even sent a notice to lodge an FIR under section 428 and 429 of IPC. But the cops didn't respond.

"After being disappointed by the police I moved court and filed a petition on the 1st of November last year under section 156/3 of CRPC for lodging an FIR. But the cops are still trying to cover up. During the hearing on the 22nd of February they said that I was trying to implicate the accused using false charges and locals had apparently said that I often do such things. But when the court asked for proof they failed to produce any. I will challenge them in the next hearing in March," Anu added.

Anu said that she had also intimated politician and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi about the whole case. There were no replies forthcoming from the police on MiD DAY's queries regarding the issue.

Just crule!
In the month of December last year a retired army officer was arrested for killing a puppy that was sitting in front of his house in Noida Sector 36. Police took action after an FIR was lodged by an animal rights activist on December 4, 2010. She stated that Sector 36 resident Col (retired) CL Bhasin killed the puppy by mercilessly smashing it on the ground. When the puppy died, he threw it in the drain. When one of the neighbours protested the former army man scolded her. Bhasin has been booked under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
