Coimbatore: A 50-year-old man died after a suicide drama to scare his quarrelling wife, which went awry as the chair on which he stood with the noose around his neck collapsed leaving him hanging at his house here, police said today.

Though his wife and neighbours brought him down and rushed him to the government hospital, he died without responding to treatment, they said.

Soundararajan of Sulur was employed in a private company and used to come home late often, which resulted in frequent quarrel between him and his wife.

Following one such quarrel last night, Soundararajan threatened to commit suicide if she continued to pester him.

As his wife neglected his warning, the man climbed onto a chair and tied a noose on the ceiling and around his neck.

However, the chair gave way and the noose got tightened around his neck, resulting in suffocation, police said. Hearing his screams for help, his wife, away in kitchen, rushed and alerted neighbours who brought him down and took him to a private hospital.

He was immediately shifted to the Government Hospital where he died without responding to the treatment, police said adding, further investigation was on.
