Actor, and now very much a 100-crore plus star, Sushant Singh Rajput, ought to be flying high these days, what with the massive success of his recent Dhoni biopic. As it turns out, we were flying high with him too on Sunday. And quite literally so.

Sushant was on the seat next to ours on the flight returning to Mumbai from Delhi — or Chandigarh, in his case, where he had gone to watch his latest blockbuster with his family (his sister lives in Chandigarh; his parents, in Delhi).

Naturally our conversation with Sushant centred on Dhoni, or rather him playing the cricket champ's part so convincingly. Here's what we learnt that you might not know. You of course know that actual television footage of Dhoni & Co. were used in the film for sequences where Captain Cool represents India on the cricket field.

But in the portions where Dhoni hits his cricketing shots, the body is actually Sushant's. He shot these portions swinging a cricket bat, imagining a ball before a green screen. These visuals were later merged with the original footage.

In the parts where Dhoni emotes and interacts with fellow players (Sachin, Virat etc), the body is Dhoni's, but the face is Sushant's — wherein the actor (who'd prepared for a year for the role), was given markers on exactly where and how to move his face that could be seamlessly pasted over a smiling Dhoni from the video recording. Ah well. Devil is clearly in the detail. And well played, we'd say.
