Competing with private players who lure passengers at the state transport (ST) bus stands with lower fares; the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has opened two new counters at Swargate depot. Tickets for AC and luxury buses heading for Mumbai will be sold at these 'Hirkani' booths on platforms 4 and 5 of the stand.

This new initiative was introduced to make it convenient for the holiday crowd to get confirmed tickets on these buses and to clear the extra rush. To avoid goof ups and confusion, a coordinator has been specially appointed to manage conductors, drivers and passengers on the stand.

"Earlier, the booking for these buses was done at a counter outside the platform within the stand premises, where passengers would have to stand in long queues to get their tickets.

The line would often extend to the road where private bus agents would steal customers by offering them cheaper fares. So to take on illegal private agents, we set up special Hirkani booths a week ago," said Swargate depot manager Rajiv Gaikwad.

"There are many new initiatives in the pipeline such as timetable boards at every platform displaying the information destination-wise and passengers can make enquires at all the booking windows as well.

The coordinator at the 'Hirkani' booths too will inform the passengers about the availability of seats and the fares," added Gaikwad.
