Why Impedance matters?

It is usually observed that lower the impedance, higher is the volume of a headphone. However, a headphone with higher impedance consumes less current, thus increasing the playing time of a player. Broadcast headphones generally have high impedance between 1.5k(Ohm) and 2k(Ohm), professional designs have range from 150(Ohm) to 600(Ohm) and portable headphones have impedances in the 8-32(Ohm) region.
