Driven to death: Shrushti Dabhade committed suicide on Tuesday

The deceased Srushti Dabhade, daughter of criminal lawyer Vijay Dabhade, was studying in the Std XI at Balvikas Vidyalaya in Talegaon, and she was allegedly being tormented by the accused youth since the past few months, the family said. Her family has also levelled allegations against the local police saying that they did not take cognisance of their complaints against the accused teen, which led to her death.

Pune Rural police have, however, refuted the charges of the girl’s family that they shirked their duties while accepting the complaint against the
boy.u00a0Srushti had jumped off the water tank at around 2.30 pm. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment. No suicide note was found in her possession.

Soon after the incident, a furious mob staged a ‘rasta roko’ at the Pune-Mumbai highway, which stalled traffic for an hour. As a mark of protest, Shrushti’s relatives kept her body at the Talegaon police station premises till late night and demanded that action should be taken against the concerned officer for delaying the FIR registration.

With matters getting out of hand, Additional SP Vijay Magar assured the mob that DySP Vaibhav Kalubarme would investigate the matter and submit a report in 15 days.u00a0Only after this assurance, the relatives allowed the post-mortem to be conducted, which was carried out at 1.30 am.

Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural) Manoj Lohiya said, “Srushti’s parents had came to the Talegaon police station at around 11 am on Tuesday to lodge a complaint against the boy. However, Vijay Dabhade left the premises citing that he has to attend the court.

The police station house officer had even called Dabhade on his mobile phone at around 12.30 pm about registering their compliant, but Dabhade told him that he would return at 5 pm. But, in the intervening period, Srushti committed suicide.”

“These developments — of policemen informing Dabhade about registering his complaint — have been noted in the station diary at the police
station. Prima facie investigations have revealed that Dabhade’s family had for the first time on Tuesday approached the Talegaon police regarding the harassment by the boy. Investigations are ongoing, and we have booked the concerned youth and he will be arrested soon in this case,” added Lohiya.

Police yesterday said they have traced the accused teenager and arrested him. The police identified him as Aakash Salvi. Meanwhile, Lohiya also said that police inspector Rajendra Patil, head constable R H Bendbhar and writer Sandeep Sankpal have been suspended in the case.
