Happy reunion: Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray meets veteran
cartoonist R K Laxman at his home in Aundh yesterday

Thackeray and Laxman were colleagues in the Free Press Journal way back in 1950. When they met yesterday, Laxman gifted Thackeray a drawing of his well-known 'Common Man'. "I am sad that he cannot speak to me much owing to his ill health, but we shared a great time together when we used to criticise the then government through our cartoons," he said.

Thackeray said the cartoons by new crop of cartoonists did not appeal to him much, as they did not have the depth to criticise current situations. The Sena leader also strongly condemned the attack on Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and said the attack on the Marathi leader in Delhi would not be tolerated by the people of the state.

"Although Pawar and I have differences in ideology, the relations have been cordial between us since the past many years. He (Pawar) is one of the senior-most leaders of the state, and he was insulted in Delhi," said Thackeray.

Thackeray said there were many ways to protest in a democracy, but the attack on a "generous" leader like Pawar could not be justified in any situation. Thackeray, who was accompanied by his son and executive president of Shiv Sena Uddhav Thackeray and grandson Aditya, hinted he might campaign for the upcoming civil polls.
