A few alert citizens managed to catch hold of four fake godmen robbing an RTO agent's office on Monday. Three were arrested, and the fourth will be arrested after he is discharged from hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained during the thrashing by the public.

According to the police, the incident took place at Vardali in Khadakpada, Kalyan West. The four were identified as Moknath Rajasthani, Dhananath Kalbeliya, Kisanath Kanunath and Vijaynath Kalbeliya. They are in their early and late 30s. On Monday around 11 am, Rohan Babade, 29, the agent, was sitting in his office when the godmen approached him.

"After a discussion, a ritual was carried out, during which Babade fell unconscious. The godmen then started looting the office. Their conversations and noises were heard by people nearby, who quickly arrived and caught them and beat them up. They were later handed over to us," said an officer from Khadakpada police.

The four had blown something into Babade's face to make him unconscious. "They said they are beggars and survive by roaming around. The arrested trio will be produced in court on Tuesday. They tried to rob the Rs 4,000-5,000 that was in the office. Babade is undergoing treatment," said Balasaheb Kadam, senior inspector.

A case has been registered at Khadakpada police station under sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc), 382 (theft after preparation made for causing death, etc) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
