They are elected by us to solve the country's biggest woes. But many Members of Parliament these days are hiring help to deal with a problem of their own - the menace of stray monkeys. It's a nuisance that has afflicted both VVIPs and ordinary Delhiites for many years now.

Man's best friend! Deep Chand and his monkey keep MPs safe

Apparently, a large number of MPs are opting for services of langurs to save their flower and vegetable gardens from the monkey menace.

According to reports, one of the MPs on the list is Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni, who has deployed a langur to protect priceless flowers and beautiful plants at her official residence.

Tail of woes
"Irritated by the monkeys, MPs are choosing langurs to save their flowers and plants. A large number of them are ready to pay a good price for the langur," said an MP on the condition of anonymity. When this MiD DAY reporter met a langur owner at the official residence of Ambika Soni, he told us about other places where he is providing these services.

"Our langurs have been deployed at the houses of many MPs. One man from our team along with the langur is present at the house from 9am to 5pm every day. We have been in this profession for the last ten years," said Deep Chand.

Private security
When MiD DAY contacted the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, her office-bearer conceded that a langur had indeed been hired by the leader.

"A couple of months back we had deployed langurs at the official residence. But, it was only to protect the flowers. Now we don't need the services," he said. Langurs have also been stationed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sena Bhavan, British Embassy, North and South Block and Nirman Bhavan. The house of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is also on the list.

Asking price
Langur owners charge Rs 7,500 per month. This includes cost of food and shelter."Our team member will come along with the langur to your doorstep. He will look after the food and other requirements. But, if you want, you can give them a space to stay at your house too," added Deep Chand.

Four langurs have been positioned at the Rashtrapati Bhavan to protect the rare flowers and plants grown in the area. The services are for 24 hours a day. The primates and their handlers have also been given a place to stay.

The then Delhi Deputy Mayor S S Bajwa died in New Delhi in 2007 of head injuries after falling from the terrace of his house following an attack by monkeys. The 52-year-old Corporator from Anand Vihar ward was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Apollo hospital with multiple injuries and his condition deteriorated later leading to his death.
Bajwa, a businessman and Delhi BJP Vice-President, was walking on the terrace of the first floor of his house when the monkeys attacked him after which he lost balance and fell from the terrace.u00a0 Bajwa was elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for the first time in April 2007.
This is one of many cases of monkey attack on the city's denizens. The High Court has pulled up the Municipal Corporation of Delhi several times in the past to curb monkey menace in the Capital.
