Army daredevil to perform country's firstu00a0base jump attempt from Pitampura TV tower
It's a high point for the Indian Army. Lt Col Satyendra Verma and his skydiving team will jump from the 235-metre-high Pitampura television tower on Friday. This would be the first BASE jump ever in India.
'I dare you': Lt Col Satyendra Verma once broke all his bones in a road
accident, but got back to pursuing his passion as soon as he had recovered.
In Bace jumping, a person leaps off stationary objects like Buildings, Antennae, Spans (bridges) or Earth (hence the acronym). Verma, who claims it is more of mind game, has made stepping out of moving planes so much of a habit that he hesitates to tell you exactly how many times he has done it. "1100," he finally says, modestly.
Only an expert skydiver can try BASE jumping and in India there is no civil drop zone so onlyu00a0 an army officer can do it.The Corps of Signals, Indian Army, is celebrating its centenary year from Feb 2010 to Feb 2011. As part of a number of adventure activities being conducted during the Centenary Year, some record-breaking attempts in the field of Aero Adventure Sports are being made.
Verma is an adventure enthusiast and expert in Hand gliding P2 pilot, Paragliding, Hot air ballooning, Skydiving and BASE jumping which he began doing in the year 2009. He has participated in the World Military parachuting championship in Russia in 2006 and has performed BASE jump from KL Tower, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia.u00a0u00a0
u00a0"This event has never been done in India before. It is a step ahead of skydiving as there you have two parachutes while in BASE jumping you have only a few seconds to open your parachute. This attempt may attract a lot of youths and could help in developing this sport," said Verma.
