A court yesterday convicted three men for gang-raping an American tourist in June, an attack that further dented the country'simage as a safe place for women and prompted the US to issue an advisory warning its citizens of the dangers of travelling to India.

The men, from Nepal, were sentenced to 20-year prison terms, according to Vinod Kumar Dhawan, who headed the police team investigating the assault.

The incident took place in a small town in the Himalayas that is a popular destination for backpackers. Police investigators said the American woman, a Californian native, was gang-raped and robbed after accepting a truck driver’s offer to drive her to the guesthouse.

According to the police complaint, three men in a truck offered her a ride to her hotel at 1 am but instead raped her and stole her phone, camera and money, the report said.

Tuesday’s judgment came a day after the one-year anniversaryof the December 16 gang rape in the Capital.
