An I-T officer died on Thursday when a vehicle carrying three of 12 Income Tax officers heading back to Pune after raids in Talegaon, met with an accident on the old Mumbai-Pune highway. The deceased I-T officer has been identified as Abhishek Anil Tyagi, 28, from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The others in the vehicle who were injured were Anand Upadhyay, 38, and Krishnakumar alias K K Mishra, 33. The injured are undergoing treatment at Ruby hospital in Hinjewadi. Due to the mishap, traffic on the old Mumbai-Pune highway was affected, and was brought under control after five hours.


Tyagi had completed a course in chemical engineering from Thappar University Patiala, and was selected as an I-T officer and initially appointed in a Mumbai branch in October 2014. In February this year he was transferred to the Pune branch. Upadhyay is Deputy Director of I-T investigation and Mishra is an ITO.

The accident
The incident took place on Thursday morning near Somatane phata at Amar Devi temple near Dehu road in Pune. A case of accident has been registered with Dehu road police station against the truck driver into whose vehicle the officers' SUV dashed. He has been detained. Sub-Divisional Police officer (SDPO) Ganpat Madgulkar said, "The accident took place on Thursday around 6.15 am. There was a team of 12 officers who were in three different sports utility vehicles (SUV) heading back to their Swargate office from raids. A truck which contained iron rods had broken down and the driver had parked it in the middle of the narrow lane. Suddenly the officers' Tavera, number MH-12-FC2615, crashed into the rear of the truck and Tyagi who was seated beside the driver, died on the spot. The driver of the vehicle escaped with minor injuries."

Inspector Arun More of Dehu road police station who is investigating the case said, "After the accident, we and the other officials rushed everyone to Pavana hospital and later Ruby Hall hospital in Hinjewadi. Tyagi was declared dead by doctors while two others escaped with fractures on the head and hands and minor injuries." He added, "We have detained the driver of the truck and later we will arrest him and produce him before court. After the post-mortem Tyagi's body was handed over to his family."

Investigation is on
An officer said, "The team of I-T officers were in Talegaon and Maval for past two days to conduct raids. An investigation is on to find if the incident was purposely set up or was accidental."
