Even as constable Vilash Shinde, who died on Wednesday after being attacked by two men in Khar, is receiving nearly Rs 60 lakh as compensation, the widow of another police official, who died four years ago, while on duty, has alleged that the state authorities haven’t provided any compensation to her family.

"We only want some respect and support from the authorities,” said Kavita, the 41-year-old widow of assistant sub-inspector Dattu Sarnobat, who died while chasing car jackers in Kherwadi.

In August 2012, Sarnobat (53) from Kherwadi police station was badly injured when he attempted to prevent a car jacking at the Bandra bridge. He was rushed to Bhabha Hospital, and later shifted to Bombay Hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Sarnobat's wife Kavita and two sons reside at the Mhada police colony in Andheri (East).

Speaking to mid-day, Kavita said, “We are not against what Shinde is getting. We are just asking what were all the authorities doing, when my husband died?”

She says that not only did they not receive any help, the family was also slapped with a one-month notice to vacate their house in the police colony, after her husband’s death. “It’s only when my brother got into the police service that the flat stayed with us,” said Kavita. She added, “They had also promised to install a memorial in our village in Satara, and give us a flat, but nothing has been done till now.”
