28 January,2026 05:14 PM IST | New Delhi | ANIThe tragic and untimely demise of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on Wednesday has not only left a vacuum in the BJP-led state coalition government, but also cast a shadow on the future of the NCP. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is likely to face a leadership crisis following Ajit Pawar's death, as there is no clear second-in-command, say political observers. As the 'clock' symbol lost its undisputed leader, questions loomed over the party's survival and its future equation with founder Sharad Pawar, whose Rajya Sabha tenure ends in April this year. There has been speculation whether the NCP might reunite with the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), especially as ties between the factions have softened in recent months. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will need to ensure that the 41 MLAs aligned with Ajit Pawar do not drift back toward Sharad Pawar, political analysts say. Ajit Pawar's wife, Sunetra, is currently a Rajya Sabha member and has been politically active, though she lacks administrative experience. The NCP has one Lok Sabha member, Sunil Tatkare, and two Rajya Sabha MPs - Praful Patel and Sunetra Pawar. With NCP founder Sharad Pawar staying away from the public glare during the recently held local bodies and civic elections, his daughter and NCP (SP) working president, Supriya Sule, campaigned for the party candidates, but was no match for her cousin Ajit Pawar, who campaigned statewide. State politics was abuzz with speculation about a possible merger of NCP (SP) with the NCP under Ajit Pawar's leadership. However, his untimely death in a plane crash has cast uncertainty over the future of his faction. Apart from state NCP president Sunil Tatkare and national working president Praful Patel, the party lacks a senior leader capable of succeeding Ajit Pawar. The only other mass-based leader, Chhagan Bhujbal-recently acquitted in a money laundering case-is currently unwell. While Patel and Tatkare have been key organisational figures, they lack the statewide grassroots connect that Ajit Pawar commanded. In the ruling Mahayuti, which won a massive mandate in the 2024 assembly polls, the BJP has 132 MLAs, followed by Eknath Shinde- led Shiv Sena with 57 and Pawar's NCP 41. Senior journalist Prakash Akolkar told PTI that both NCP factions are contesting the February 5 Zilla Parishad elections together on the 'clock' symbol, effectively signalling an unofficial merger. "The question is no longer about who merges with whom. With only two Opposition parties left-Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT)-it remains to be seen whether the Congress can revive itself," he said. In the recently-concluded civic polls in Maharashtra, the NCP, which contested separately from Mahayuti allies, bagged 167 seats across 29 municipal corporations and was defeated by the BJP on its home ground of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, where it had aligned with Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP), which won only 36 seats across the state. In the 165-member Pune Municipal Corporation, the NCP won only 27 seats and NCP (SP) 3 seats against BJP's tally of 119, whereas in the 102-member Pimpri Chinchwad civic body, Ajit Pawar's party got 37 and Sharad Pawar's faction drew a blank, while BJP got 84 seats. Last month, in the polls to 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats, the NCP won 966 and NCP (SP) 256 out of the total 6,851 seats. Mohol, while paying a heartfelt tribute to Ajit Pawar, called it an irreparable loss to the state's political and social life. Mohol, while recalling his association with Ajit Pawar, said, "I'm truly at a loss for words right now. I worked with him for many years, and this is a profound shock. He was a popular leader from Maharashtra who had carved a unique identity for himself in the state's politics over the past four decades. He was known as a public representative with a strong grip on administration," as cited by news agency PTI. BJP leader Mohol also added, "I remember working with him in this city for 2.5 years during the COVID crisis. He was the president of the state's Olympic association, and I served as the vice-president alongside him. And today, Dada is no longer with us—this is extremely painful. This is a great loss for the social and political life of Maharashtra." Murlidhar Mohol praises Ajit Pawar’s administrative work Mohol further said that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief was among the few leaders who commanded respect across party lines. Mohol also added, "The thought that Dada will never return to us is also very painful. There were only a few leaders in Maharashtra politics who ruled the hearts of workers across all parties, whose leadership was always guiding and inspiring—that was Dada. It was my great fortune to have received so much of his guidance and support," as per PTI. Expressing grief over Ajit Pawar’s untimely demise, Mohol also added, "I cannot even imagine the politics and social life of this district and Maharashtra without Dada. This is a loss for society, a loss for Maharashtra. This is a major blow to the Pawar family, but it is equally a blow to the political workers of Maharashtra. I don't know what to say today. The politics of this district and Maharashtra will remain incomplete without Dada. I don't even have the courage to use a word like 'tribute' for him." 28 January,2026 04:59 PM IST | Pune | mid-day online correspondentIn the wake of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister (CM) Ajit Pawar’s tragic death in a plane crash at Baramati on Wednesday, aviation experts and friends of the pilot have shared insights on possible causes of the accident. Speaking to news agency ANI, Captain (retired) Ehsan Khalid, a former Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot and a longtime friend of Captain Sumit Kapur, the deceased pilot of the ill-fated aircraft, said, “It was a tragic incident. I have known the pilot since my Sahara days, almost two decades ago. He was an experienced pilot. I am told that as the plane was making its first approach, it had to go around and make a second approach. I do not know whether the first approach was abandoned due to bad visibility alone, or whether technical issues also played a role. To my knowledge, no call of technical malfunction has been reported.” Captain Khalid further stated that the mishap could have occurred owing to a combination of bad weather, technical issues, or pilot judgment error. “According to the media and the DGCA, visibility was marginal. That means it was neither very good nor very bad. Marginal visibility creates a kind of ‘go or no-go’ situation. At smaller airfields like Baramati, which do not have many electronic aids, the actual visibility may have been lower than reported. The pilot’s perception in the aircraft may differ from the reported figures. The DGCA has taken control of all aircraft documents to determine whether there were any technical shortcomings at the time of release,” Captain Khalid told ANI from Seattle. #WATCH | Seattle, USA: On Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s Demise, Former IAF Pilot & friend of the deceased pilot in the crash, Capt (R) Ehsan Khalid says, "... Pilots undergo medical check-ups, and aircraft are thoroughly inspected before take-off. Normally, Air Traffic Control (ATC) coordinates the landing, but the small airport near Pune where the plane was supposed to land does not have computerised ATC facilities. The pilot had to land by visually assessing the airfield. Without ATC guidance, it is possible the pilot did not see the airfield at the last minute, or in rare cases, even blacked out,” Goyal told PTI. A statement by his ministry recounted the final minutes of the ill-fated Learjet 45 belonging to VSR Ventures Pvt Ltd that crashed, leading to the death of all five persons on board including Pawar. Baramati has an 'uncontrolled airfield', and traffic information is provided by the instructors/pilots from the Flying training Organisations at Baramati. It was advised to descend in "visual meteorological conditions" at the pilot's discretion. The crew enquired about the winds and visibility, and were informed that the winds were calm and visibility was around 3,000 metres. "Next the aircraft reported on the final approach of Runway 11 and the runway was not in sight to them. They initiated a go-around in the first approach," the civil aviation ministry statement said. After the go-around, the crew was again asked if they could spot the runway. The reply was: "Runway is currently not in sight, will call when runway is in sight". After a few seconds, the crew reported that they could spot the runway. "The aircraft was cleared to land on runway 11 at 0843 IST (8.43 am). However, they did not give a readback of the landing clearance (did not respond to ATC). Next, the ATC saw the flames around the threshold of runway 11 at 0844 IST (8.44 am)," the statement said.
