Breast cancer is a pressing healthcare concern in India, marked by a rising incidence and a growing public health challenge. With a population exceeding 1.3 billion, the burden of breast cancer is affecting both urban and rural areas. Screening programs and creating awareness about the disease can play a crucial role in early detection and management of the disease.

Dr. Pratibha Vallabh Kansagara has been facing breast cancer since December 2018. As a gynaecologist, she regularly underwent mammograms. However, the screening in December 2018 marked a pivotal moment in her life. Initially, the screening showed no abnormalities. Yet, four months later, in April 2019, she detected a lump and experienced itching, prompting another mammogram. This subsequent screening uncovered the presence of malignancy. This unexpected development set in motion a series of medical interventions, including a biopsy, PET scan, and ultimately, surgery.

After encountering a lump in the outer part of the breast which later moved to the inner part of the breast she had to begin with chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy and subcutaneous treatment. The initial treatments had few side effects like shaking hands, weakness, and severe diarrhea which eventually put her practice on hold. She had to change her food habits as well as clothing patterns while on chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Later in 2022 when her reports declared HER2+ she was prescribed PHESGO which had no side effects for her. As per Dr. Pratibha PHESGO gave her more time to spend with the family as it would take very less time as compared to the other treatments.

Despite the adversity faced, Dr. Pratibha's message to others was clear – regular check-ups and early detection are paramount in the fight against breast cancer. She encouraged everyone to seek medical attention if they detect any breast abnormalities and not lose hope.

Dr. Chirag Desai, a consulting oncologist and the director of Hemato Oncology Clinic at Vedanta in Ahmedabad, the treating physician for Dr. Pratibha, added, “She displayed great resilience and collaboration during her journey. Following six rounds of chemotherapy, she achieved full remission. Despite the absence of the disease in her body, we administered radiation to the specific areas where the cancer had been present, adhering to a comprehensive treatment approach.

Throughout her cancer journey, Dr. Pratibha's family played a pivotal role and stood as pillars of strength, offering unwavering support. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, it underscores the importance of emotional and mental resilience during cancer treatment. Her journey demonstrates the significance of a strong support system and the unwavering determination to overcome life's greatest challenges. Her story of the indomitable human spirit and the support of innovation in the breast cancer treatment.
