Medical experts and youth leaders unite on World Meditation Day to address air pollution, mental health, and conscious living in Delhi.
World Meditation Day
Medical experts and youth leaders address pollution, mental well-being, and conscious living on World Meditation Day.
New Delhi: As Delhi grapples with alarming air pollution and its cascading effects on public health, DP Purifier, in collaboration with Heal Foundation, hosted a dual-format initiative at The Oberoi, New Delhi, bringing together leading doctors, wellness leaders, policymakers, law enforcement officials, and youth to address pollution, preventive healthcare, mental well-being, and substance abuse.
Held on World Meditation Day, the initiative featured two thoughtfully curated sessions - a morning doctor-led deliberation and an Art of Living Musical Clubbing Satsang Sandhya in the evening. Both sessions aimed to reinforce the importance of clean air and conscious living as foundational pillars of healthier urban communities.
Doctors Warn: Pollution Is the Silent Public Health Emergency
The morning session was attended by 50 eminent medical experts from across Delhi NCR, highlighting the often-overlooked public health crisis posed by both indoor and outdoor air pollution. Experts noted that rising pollution levels have caused respiratory damage even among non-smokers, with urban lungs increasingly resembling those of chronic smokers.
Padma Shri awardee Dr. J.M. Hans, Senior ENT Specialist, said, “Air pollution is no longer just an environmental concern-it is affecting hearing, immunity, and respiratory health across all age groups.” Dr. Pavan Gurha, HOD Anaesthesiology Critical Care & Pain Clinic , Batra Hospital, emphasized, “We are seeing a steady rise in asthma, COPD, and weakened immunity among children and the elderly due to prolonged exposure to polluted air.” Dr. Smita Aggarwal, Gynecologist, highlighted links between air pollution and women’s health, including pregnancy-related complications and hormonal imbalance, while Dr. S.K. Poddar, Senior Laparoscopic Surgeon, noted, “Indoor air pollution in homes, offices, and healthcare settings is an often-neglected but major contributor to long-term health risks.”
Youth Awakening Through Meditation and Collective Resolve
The evening session shifted focus to mental well-being and social responsibility with the Art of Living Musical Clubbing Satsang Sandhya. Led by Mrs. Shabnam Avasthi, Leading Apex Member of the Art of Living, it saw participation from around 150 youth.
A highlight was the live guided meditation by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji from New York, emphasizing mindfulness, inner peace, and conscious awareness as tools to overcome stress, addiction, and negative behavioural patterns. The session evolved into a youth awakening, centred on community responsibility and the national vision of a Drug-Free India under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. Participants took a collective pledge to avoid drugs, alcohol, and substance abuse while promoting mental well-being and healthy lifestyle choices. The pledge was actively facilitated by Mr. Lakshya Singh Manral, Narcotics Official, who highlighted the importance of awareness, early intervention, and peer support. Senior officials present included Pankaj Bansal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation; Inspector Nawal Sharma; and representatives from the Delhi Narcotics Department, demonstrating governance support in preventive initiatives.
The session also welcomed Dr. Ashish Kumar Bhutani, Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and his wife Jyoti Jaju, Rakhi Agarwal, wife of Rabindra Agarwal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation, and Siddharth Jain, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Cooperation. All dignitaries were formally facilitated and greeted by Dr. Ravindra Kumar Tyagi, Chairman, Centre for India Progressing, and Trustee, The Art of Living (AOL), Bengaluru, who joined the meditation session in solidarity with the objectives of World Meditation Day and Nasha Mukt Bharat movement.
A Unified Vision for Preventive Health
The dual initiative concluded with a shared message - clean air, mental clarity, and informed lifestyle choices are vital for preventive health. By bridging medical science, technology, and mindful living, the event highlighted the need for integrated approaches to urban health challenges.
