Adnan's first cut

Singer-composer Adnan Sami is in a whacky mood when we meet him. We can't keep ourselves from asking him about his new inningsu00a0-- acting (he's been signed on Bela Sehgal's first film and is considering several offers), and he can't resist the urge to give us cryptic answers that are followed by his trademark laugh.

We ask him whether he always wanted to act, and not surprisingly, given the mood that he's in, he says, "I've been acting since I was born. We've all been, haven't we?" He talks to CS:

It's true that I've got several acting offers and we're in the process of finalising deals.u00a0 I think acting comes naturally to me because I've been doing videos and have also done a bit of theatre in college.



I'm looking to play different rolesu00a0-- definitely nothing as clich ufffdd as playing a pop star or as out-of-the-box as Rambo! As of now, you'll be seeing me in everyday roles like the man on the streetu00a0-- stuff that you can relate to.

Having said that, one character that I would love to play would be the Godfather. It is fantastic how Marlon Brando has underplayed the role of such a powerful man. I remember doing a spoof of the Godfather and that was fun too. I enjoy comedy and I am also gearing up for one such film.

Slim chance
I never aspired to be an actor, just like I didn't plan to be a singer, but life had a bigger plan for me. Frankly, five years ago I could never have imagined that I could be an actor because I was so overweight. And then when I starting dropping all those kilos, people thought that I was doing it to become an actor. But that wasn't true, I just wanted to be healthy.

In fact I lost out on one role because it was originally written for an obese man, and by the time Bela (Sehgal, filmmaker) got the paperwork ready, I was no more overweight and didn't suit the character. But I'm looking forward to singing a new tune now and I know that I'm not the first musician to be venturing into acting.

On a song
Many singers have been there, done thatu00a0-- Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Kishorore Kumar, Himesh Reshamiya, Lucky Ali, to name a few, but my favourite would have to be Kishoreji.

I don't know if my acting style will be influenced by his or by any of my favourite actors. But I do feel that we do subconsciously get influenced by our surroundings. Which is why the media plays such an important role. I guess now, I'm talking like a true journalist.
