Youngest co-star Alia Bhatt on what she admires about Shah Rukh Khan, and how they are like two kids together

Working alongside a superstar is a big deal for a young actress like Alia Bhatt, who is barely four years old in this industry. In her ‘swanky’ co-star Shah Rukh Khan, who rings in his 51st birthday today, Alia found a teacher, but mostly, a friend. Since most actors admittedly learn on the job, she agrees that Gauri Shinde's 'Dear Zindagi' helped her go back to the basics and re-learn.

“When you spend that much time around an actor of his stature, you learn something elementary from them — how to create magic in each frame. He is never patronising; he slips in suggestions in the middle of normal conversations. His advice doesn’t have a bossy tone. Neither does he make it look like he knows better than most of us — although he actually does. In the first few schedules, I was still learning, but by the time the film was coming to an end, Gauri could see changes in my performance. She’d compliment me for paying heed to details in each frame. Almost all of it, I had picked up from him,” she chuckles.
Did the age difference ever seem like a generation gap? She shakes her head, saying, “With his kind of energy, you don’t age. Gauri had to handle two kids simultaneously on set. There was a scene where we both had to laugh, and we just couldn’t stop giggling. I think we took maximum takes for that scene. Gauri was so exasperated that she granted us a laugh break.”
Alia points out that the way SRK conducted himself on set was heartwarming, patiently taking in feedback and suggestions despite being an experienced actor. “There is such warmth and kindness in the way he speaks to everyone, regardless of their age or experience. Professionally, he is still learning. Most of us around him neither has his success nor his experience and yet, he pays heed to everyone’s inputs,” she elaborates.
