Actress Tanishaa Mukerji, on Tuesday, seems to have become nostalgic as she took a trip down memory lane and shared an archival photograph of her late aunt and legendary actress Nutan, along with Jaya Bachchan. Taking to her social media account, Tanishaa reposted a vintage picture that appears to be from an award show from the golden era of Hindi cinema. The picture shows the legendary actress Nutan walking alongside another legend Jaya Bachchan on what seems like a red-carpet event of the award night. You can see musicians and guestsin the background. Nutan looks graceful in a fitted blue gown paired with jewellery and heels, and Jaya Bachchan looks classy dressed in a floral saree with a bindi and minimal accessories. Sharing the picture, Tanishaa wrote, “Wow Nutan moushi was so stunning.” For the uninitiated, in the language Marathi, “moushi” means maternal aunt. Talking about Tanishaa, the actress hails from one of Bollywood’s most prominent film families and is half Maharashtrian. She is the daughter of veteran actress Tanuja, who is Nutan’s younger sister. Both Nutan and Tanuja are daughters of the late actress Shobhna Samarth, with all belonging to the Marathi clan. Tanishaa is also the younger sister of actress Kajol and the sister-in-law of actor Ajay Devgn. Talking about Nutan, the actress was among the most celebrated actresses of Hindi cinema and delivered umpteen number of memorable performances in films such as Seema, Bandini, Sujata, Anari, Milan, Saraswatichandra and many more. The legendary actress was also the mother of actor Mohnish Bahl, making actress Pranutan Bahl the granddaughter of Nutan. Mohnish is the cousin of Kajol and Tanishaa from the maternal side. Unfortunately, Nutan passed away in 1991 after battling cancer. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 11 March,2026 09:47 AM IST | Mumbai | IANSFilmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently opened up about the long-standing controversy involving his brother, filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap, and actor Salman Khan during the making of the film Dabangg. Speaking during mid-day’s Sit With Hitlist, Anurag addressed the issue but made it clear that he prefers not to publicly comment on the matter out of respect for his brother’s wishes. Anurag Kashyap reacts to Abhinav-Salman Khan controversy The filmmaker acknowledged that he is aware of the situation but has chosen to remain silent because Abhinav had previously asked him not to discuss it publicly. Explaining his stance, Anurag said, “I know exactly what is happening, but I don’t want to make any comment on it. Simply because a long time back he had asked me not to talk about him.” He emphasised that family respect is the main reason for maintaining his silence, even though the controversy has been widely discussed over the years. “And being a brother and I love him, I also understand in the sense a lot of things have been said,” he shared. The conversation also briefly touched upon the legal developments related to the dispute. When asked about reports of a case connected to the controversy, Anurag acknowledged it but still chose not to elaborate. “And there is also, I think, the case that he has lost,” he said. When the interviewer clarified, “A defamation case?” Anurag responded, “Yes, a defamation case. Which is already there.” Despite being aware of the details, the director reiterated that he cannot publicly discuss the matter. “But I can’t say anything publicly about it,” he stated firmly. “I can say whatever I want about myself. But he is a brother, and he has said very simply and clearly that I should not talk about him.” Anurag Kashyap gets candid about his family During the same conversation, Anurag also spoke about his family and recalled how his parents’ personalities influenced him as he grew up. Reflecting on them with humour, he said, “I think my dad was so handsome; my mother was so beautiful. I was like, ‘If you guys had come here in the industry, you would have become Vinod Khanna or Dilip Kumar,’ because he used to look like Vinod Khanna.” He even joked about how things might have been different if his parents had joined the film industry. “I would have been a nepo kid; my life would have been easy. If not Dharma, then it would have been Karma Productions. Something would have happened,” he said with a smile. Anurag concluded the anecdote by expressing admiration for his father, adding, “My dad is an actor from his heart.”
11 March,2026 09:43 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentFilmmaker Anurag Kashyap recently shared a candid and humorous glimpse into his personal life on mid-day’s Sit With Hitlist while speaking about family, ageing, and life lessons. During a conversation, the director was asked how he would feel about becoming a grandfather if his daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap, decides to have children in the future. In response, Anurag revealed that he already considers himself a grandfather in a rather adorable way. Plans on becoming a grandfather Explaining the situation, the filmmaker said that his daughter treats her pets like her children, which technically makes him a grandparent. “She has three kids. There is one Cosmo, and there are these two little cats, and she considers herself a mother, so I am already a grandfather,” he said with a smile. Despite the light-hearted comment, Anurag also spoke about how younger people often look up to him, which sometimes makes him feel older. “But the thing is, it's not like I mean, I think I have that inside me. The young people who come, they look at me like that, it only happens automatically,” he added. Reflecting on the idea of ageing, Anurag shared an interesting perspective about how people start feeling older when their children grow up quickly. “You don't grow old because you grow old in age. You grow old because you had your child early, who grew old too fast,” he said. He further explained how these milestones serve as reference points, making people more aware of the passage of time. “You see a reference point each time,” Anurag noted. The filmmaker also recalled the first time someone from the younger generation addressed him as "Uncle", a moment that made him realise how perceptions change over time. “I think the first person to call me 'uncle' was Sara Ali Khan,” he revealed. Anurag Kashyap talks about the advice he would give his younger self During the conversation, Anurag also reflected on the lessons he would share with his younger self, particularly about career decisions and finances. Speaking honestly, he said, “I would have told my younger self not to produce. Empower people, but never start any company. What you're not good at.” However, he also clarified that he does not regret the choices he made in life. Instead, he sees them as valuable experiences that helped him grow. “Not that I regret anything because I only bought books and movies, and whenever I had an extra, I would support a short film and everything,” he said. He admitted that saving money might have made certain moments easier. “I would have saved 10 per cent. I wouldn't have had to act for my daughter's wedding if I had saved that amount,” he joked. Still, Anurag concluded with a sense of acceptance and gratitude. “But I've lived my life like this, and there are no regrets. There's been a lot of learning. Maybe I would not have been the same person, but yes, there's been a lot of learning.”

11 March,2026 09:24 AM IST | Mumbai (Maharashtra) | ANIAnurag Kashyap has given Indian cinema one of its finest films, like Gangs of Wasseypur and Black Friday, to name a few. However, during his recent conversation with Sit with Hitlist, the filmmaker shared how he never thought Gangs of Wasseypur could be the ‘masterpiece’ he always dreamt of making. The filmmaker also got candid about a few controversies attached to his name, such as the Epstein Files mention and the IT raid at his home. Anurag Kashyap reacts to the Epstein Files mention and IT raid When asked about his name being mentioned in the controversial Epstein Files, he promptly says, “In a mail. In a random mail,” before adding, “We get invitations from Harvard, Yale, everywhere. I don't know. I have never been to Beijing. I have been to Shanghai in China once before 2014, I played recce in Bombay.” He further jokes that he thinks to himself, “Wow! What a company I have.” Further talking about the IT raid at his house in 2021. He shared, “It had more to do with Phantom Films, because we got out and we split, and the valuation. What was there? What wasn't there? Who has it? Who doesn't have it? All that kind of thing happened.” Further talking about the producing films phase of his career, he reveals, “I was the happiest when I was not a producer.” He adds, “I know how to spot people. I do that today as well, but I send them to places, people who I know will make the films.” He further shares, “My weak point is handling money, for which I am always dependent on somebody else. And that somebody else has always let me down. So, instead of constantly being let down, it is better to work as a director.” Anurag Kashyap opens up about the failure of Nishaanchi The filmmaker also opened up about making a masterpiece. When pointed out that he had already made a masterpiece in Gangs of Wasseypur, the filmmaker says he didn’t know that when making the film. He adds that in his head Bombay Velvet was a masterpiece, and not Gangs of Wasseypur.” Kashyap adds, “I love making films. I never had the end result in mind. I never thought what would be made. I just wanted to honestly make a film.” Talking of his recent release, Nishaanchi, he says, “I have sat on Nishaanchi for 8 years to do it the right way, thinking I am doing something for myself, and this film as a whole is going to be a masterpiece.” He further adds, “By the time it came out, nobody wanted to see the film. They wanted to speed it up. After the film was released, I was talking to my producer that ‘Do you think I should just sit down and try and make a faster cut for today's generation?’ But that is not how I wanted to make this film.”
11 March,2026 08:31 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentFilmmaker Anurag Kashyap is known to be one of the few filmmakers in the industry who has always led strong narratives above anything else. His films have almost always struck the critical chord more than box office numbers. Talking about the same, in the recent episode of Sit with Hitlist, Anurag Kashyap opened up about how he has often made the first films of studios, before they went commercial. During the conversation, he also spoke about Vicky Kaushal, who debuted with the filmmaker’s 2015 film Masaan. Anurag Kashyap on Vicky Kaushal going mainstream after Masaan Anurag Kashyap discussed how he was the entry point for a lot of film studios and production houses. He joked, “I am the first film of every studio, and then they go out, and they become all corrupt. Then it's about stars, it's about big money and everything. For entry, I am needed; after that, just go to the side.” When asked if it was the same for others like actors, musicians, technicians, among others. For example, Vicky Kaushal, who started his career with Anurag Kashyap’s Masaan in 2025. Responding to this, Anurag says Vicky is a wrong example because the Chhaava actor always wanted to be mainstream. He says, “Vicky had no other option but to start with a Masaan. But in his heart, he was always honest; he always wanted to be mainstream. He always had the Bhangra Paa Le thing in him.” Anurag Kashyap says Vicky Kaushal would entertain them on Gangs of Wasseypur sets “Our entertainment on the sets of Gangs of Wasseypur was Vicky's dancing. We would be like, ‘Come on, Vicky, dance.’ He used to dance. He used to do action scenes,” he adds. For the unversed, Vicky Kaushal served as an assistant director (AD) to Anurag Kashyap on both parts of Gangs of Wasseypur. He was a key crew member, responsible for holding the clapperboard. Further citing the example of Vasan Bala’s 2013 short film Geek Out starring Vicky Kaushal, the filmmaker adds, “If you see the short film that Vasan (Bala) made with him for the first time, you will realise how commercial Vicky is.”

Speaking about Shahid’s journey, Pankaj said his son built his career independently without relying on his father’s name. “They go and audition on their own, and when they get selected it makes them feel good about it. It’s not because of their father’s name or their brother’s name,” he said. Praising Shahid, he added, “He stood on his own feet and made it completely on his own.” ‘Not a confident dancer’ Zeenat Aman; (right) The actor in the song ‘O Deewano Dil Sambhalo’ from ‘The Great Gambler’ Actor Zeenat Aman says she was never a confident dancer and directors soon realised that it was better to leave her to groove rather than force her to perform complicated choreography. In an Instagram post, Zeenat went down memory lane and shared a video clip of Oh Diwano Dil Samhalo from The Great Gambler (1979) with Amitabh Bachchan. Along with the video, she wrote, “I wasn’t a very confident dancer as I never had formal training unlike most of the actresses of the time. Still, I could ‘groove’ and many a director realised it’s better to leave me to my own swaying device than frustrate themselves trying to coax complicated choreography out of me!”
11 March,2026 07:35 AM IST | Mumbai | The Hitlist TeamAnurag Kashyap has moved from Mumbai to Bengaluru, citing the “toxic” environment in Bollywood and the industry’s growing focus on profits over creativity. The filmmaker said the move has improved his creativity and praised the art of Malayalam filmmaking. He further shares how everyone is striving to be a hero in Hindi films, because of which he had to change Nishaanchi’s ending. Anurag Kashyap on moving to Bengaluru Speaking about his decision to relocate, Kashyap said that the move has helped him focus better on writing and filmmaking. In a conversation with midday’s Sit With Hitlist, he said, “I moved out of Bombay, but not out of Hindi films. I will make films. But it is easier to make films from there because I am writing so much. I am happy. I have a routine. I will get up, do my morning things, go for a walk, have coffee, and exercise. I write six to eight hours every day.” He added that on days when the writing goes well, he treats himself to watching a film. Interestingly, the filmmaker revealed that he now prefers watching South Indian cinema over Hindi films. Kashyap also praised the storytelling style of Malayalam cinema. He stated how Fahadh Faasil learnt acting and became a superstar. He even pointed out how actors like Mohanlal and Mammootty are presented in a way that connects with the audience. He adds, “It doesn't matter if they make something like Lokah. But they make it so local and real. You can't do it here.” Anurag Kashyap on Nishaanchi The filmmaker also spoke about the creative struggles he faced while working on Nishaanchi. “Everyone wants to be a hero here. I went through that with Nishaanchi. I started with big actors. Every actor wanted to change the end,” he revealed. He added that filmmaker R Balki had suggested turning the story into a series. Kashyap said that if it were entirely up to him, the film might have been even longer. “If I had my way, I would not even have had two parts. But cinema did not want a five-hour film. Cinema didn't want to take a chance. I was very clear that the pacing of the film would not change based on what everybody says. Authenticity was very important to me.” The filmmaker also noted that making such a story might have been easier in other film industries. “It would have been far easier anywhere. We tried to just tell a saga, a story of a family. It was totally inspired by Leo Tolstoy and Crime and Punishment. It wasn't meant to be a gangster film,” he said. However, Kashyap admitted that the massive success of his earlier film Gangs of Wasseypur continues to shape audience expectations. “But the ghost of Wasseypur is so big, and the shadow is so big, that I am not able to get out of it,” he concluded.
11 March,2026 07:30 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentYou can travel back to the 1980s this weekend, as Booker Prize-winning author Arundhati Roy’s film In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989) will arrive in theatres after 37 years. The movie, fronted and written by Roy, was restored by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur via Film Heritage Foundation and had its world première at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival. Proud to have taken the classic to the prestigious film festival, Dungarpur said, “When the film was [restored and] ready, we thought of Berlin because it was almost the end of 2025.” Even as the film’s director Pradip Krishen and Dungarpur attended the première, Roy was conspicuously absent. She withdrew from the gala after the festival jury president, director Wim Wenders, said that filmmakers should stay out of politics when asked about the conflict in Gaza. The film’s première on February 16; (right) Shivendra Singh Dungarpur Did her absence hurt Dungarpur, who was also a member of the Berlinale jury? “That was her decision about something which had no bearing on [the film]. She didn’t want to come, and we respected her decision. It didn’t hurt me at all,” he reflected. The screening meant a lot to Dungarpur, who acquired the film’s print from Krishen in 2024. Restoration wasn’t even on his mind initially. “I got to know that Pradip wanted to give away the material. After looking at Annie’s print, I told him I’d like to restore it. I wanted to do it because it reminded me of the time I had seen the film at FTII [Film & Television Institute of India] and was moved by it. I wanted the young generation to see it,” said Dungarpur, who spent one-and-a-half years on the restoration. Spot Khan if you can Shah Rukh Khan appeared in a brief role in the 1989 film
11 March,2026 07:12 AM IST | Mumbai | Priyanka SharmaAnurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur is known as one of the most significant films of the 21st century in Indian cinema. However, it was initially written as a trilogy, but the team could not structure it. Following the template, the filmmaker released Nishaanchi in two parts on OTT, and the response was phenomenal. In a chat during mid-day’s Sit With Hitlist, Anurag also shares how OTT platforms view India primarily as a market for expanding subscriber numbers rather than nurturing quality content. Anurag on Gangs of Wasseypur being a three-part story Speaking about the decision to release both parts of Nishaanchi together on OTT, Kashyap said it came after early reactions to the first half of the film. “After we saw the reactions of part one, people were pissed off that half of the film is incomplete, there is a flashback, and it's long. I said, 'Put both the parts together; who will understand?' The generation that loved it was over 35-40. Because there is a lot of nostalgia in it. They loved Nishaanchi and the festival guys who loved it. And they wanted to show both parts.” Reflecting on his earlier work, Kashyap revealed that Gangs of Wasseypur was originally written as three scripts. However, the team struggled with structuring it as a trilogy. “Gangs of Wasseypur was two scripts. Actually, it was three scripts, but we didn’t know how to break it into three parts. It was written in like three parts,” he said. Anurag Kashyap on Netflix The filmmaker also spoke about his early association with Netflix, recalling how the platform had reached out to him as early as 2013 with a proposal related to Gangs of Wasseypur. “Netflix reached out to me on Facebook in 2013. They wanted Gangs of Wasseypur to be serialised. It became a six- or eight-episode series for the US as a trial for a month. Later, it continued further, and they even increased the budget,” Kashyap explained, adding that the project was part of the platform’s early efforts to enter the Indian market. However, Kashyap believes the streaming ecosystem has changed significantly since then. According to him, platforms that once backed artistically driven, prestige content—especially during the time of shows like Sacred Games—are now prioritising market-driven projects. Recalling a conversation with a tech executive, Kashyap said the shift is tied to data and subscription numbers. “Somebody very senior from Silicon Valley said that India is just our dumping ground. And what he meant was that 'data is the new oil'. All you want is more subscribers. A country with the highest population will always have the most subscribers. They just want subscribers. They want to maximise. They don’t want quality from India,” he claimed. Looking back at his collaborations, Kashyap pointed out that some of the studios’ first major films were associated with him. His films Dev D and Aamir were among the early titles connected with UTV Motion Pictures and SpotboyE, while Gangs of Wasseypur marked an early project for Viacom18 Motion Pictures. “I feel like for the entry, I am needed. After that, they go on to stars, big money, and everything. Then it’s like—okay, go to the side,” he said, reflecting on how the industry often sidelines filmmakers once studios scale up commercially.
