Tushar Sethi, the director of Institute of Indian Contemporary Art, is taking Indian art to global patrons through online ventures
The world is a small place, especially when it comes to art. Tushar Sethi, the director of Institute of Indian Contemporary Art, is taking Indian art to global patrons through online ventures. He tells CS how Indian contemporary art is gaining a defining presence on the world stage:
Modern fight
The modern masters drive the current market scenario. Today modern art is perceived as a stable investment, but it will change soon. Contemporary art is gaining more fans by the day. Today we have around 20-30 artists in India who are gaining fame as contemporary artists. The appeal for modern artists like MF Hussain, Raza is on an all-time high, but contemporary art will also soon pick up in demand.
Contemporary wins
Artists like Jitish Kallat, PV Santosh, Atul Dodhia, Baiju Parthan, Suryakanth Lokhande, Jagannath Panda are budding contemporary artists. In fact, Jitish Kallat is set to make the next big impact in Indian contemporary art. The global appeal for Indian art is growing not only with the Indians living abroad, but also foreign art connoisseurs who are taking equal interest in Indian art. Markets like China, Indonesia, America have huge demands. But modern paintings of Ganesha or Gajagamini are beyond their understanding and so contemporary art that depicts war or civil rights appeals to a larger market.
