Dus Tola - Movie review

DUS TOLA
U; ROMANCE, COMEDY
DIR: Ajoy
Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Dilip Prabhawalkar, Bharti Achrekar, Pallavi Sharda
Rating: **

WHAT'S IT ABOUT: Love and Dhokha, minus the sex. Not kidding on that. This story (can't be modern-day) begins in a small village by the seaside. A young goldsmith who has fallen on bad times, is in love with his wealthier next-door-neighbour's daughter. The girl convinces him that her father will say yes to the match if he makes her a dus tola necklace. He does it, lekin chupke chupke. When the time comes, the girl denies that the goldsmith gave her the necklace. Left to lick his wounds, the sonaar vows revenge.
I'm sure any guy would, especially if he wasn't getting any and got taken for a ride anyway. After all, given gold's value, the guy doesn't even get his money's worth. Or does he?

WHAT'S HOT: A hat-doff to the work of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and the more recent of Shyam Benegal's films, it's a good effort that brings you a moralistic tale without all the preachiness. The film is not heavy-handed, Manoj Bajpayee doesn't overact, Prabhawalkar is effective as always as is Bharti Achrekar.

WHAT'S NOT: Aarti Chhabria has a decent role but can do little with it. Pallavi Sharda does her pining with such pleasure, you wonder what planted those ideas into her head, considering Manoj's character never even gives her the time of day. The landscape looks a little too touched up, the tints and effects used in some scenes make it even more impossible to believe that such places exist. And what's with the town prostitute character? Is she the only one in the village? And does one have to get drunk to go any further with her? Some of the humour is standard Priyadarshan fare.

WHAT TO DO? The film is not your average popcorn fare, but a brave effort nevertheless. Try it if you're looking for something ordinary.
