Who is Salt?

Salt - Movie review

Salt
A; Thriller
Dir: Phillip Noyce
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Chiwitel Ejiofor, Liev Schreiber
Rating: **

WHAT IT's ABOUT: Who is Salt? The film answers this question in a tight 100-minute span telling us everything about the CIA operative Evelyn Salt (Jolie) who's outed by a sleeper spy labelling her as a Russian spy working against the US government. Whether or not that's true is what we find through a series of high-octane action scenes, mad car chases and a myriad of twists and turns (an assassination plot) to keep you occupied. Salt's colleague Ted (Liev Schreiber) plays an important part giving the plot its much-needed depth and diversion.

What's hot: Angelina Jolie carries the film on her lanky shoulders with ease. Barring the Underworld: Evolution series (Kate Beckinsale) I can't think of any other action- movie being sold with a woman's face on the poster. That says a lot in an industry where the Jason Bournes, James Bonds and Frank Martins rule the roost. Easy on her feet and extremely agile, Jolie manages to kick up a solid storm from the very first frame. The espionage backdrop, double crossing and interrogation scenes are well utilised to enhance the tension in the first half. Without wasting any time, Noyce gets the adrenalin rushing. The first half is super tight and everything happens so quick that you wouldn't want to check that pending SMS. The Cold War references add a touch of historical intrigue and mystery giving the setting a sense of realism.

What's not: Problems begin post-interval when Salt fails to match the tempo it set out to create. Despite the wigs, latex masks, contact lenses and accent changes, Jolie ends up being extremely one-dimensional. You have to toss out logic and reason if you want to get on the Salt ride. Almost a superhero, she's indestructible. No bullet, punch or wound can come in the way of her job. There's always a cover up, an ally, some help at the next corner when things get tight for Salt. Jolie makes up for lack in depth by flaunting her trademark pout way too often! Also the ending is ridiculously set up to make way for a sequel. Why so subtle?

What to do: Not as thrilling as Wanted or stylish as Tomb Raider, Salt's an ode to Jolie - reminding us why she's a top-earning actor in H-Town!
