With the coming of Movember, we indulge in a hairy affair where our experts spot new trends and offer tips on how to sport that moustache right

Raghav Sharma, Farmer
I’ve always wanted to keep a moustache. I loved seeing pictures of Bhagat Singh and Chandra Shekhar Azad and the way they used to twirl. I started sporting a goatee then a beard and now a moustache. I like the Talwars (that’s what they’re called in Punjabi) style the most. My moustache is inspired by a man I met in a bus while travelling to Chandigarh. I think celebrities like Freddie Mercury, Tom Selleck and Amitabh Bachchan (especially in The Great Gatsby) carry off their moustaches effortlessly. I refrain from using any moustache wax or any product. I condition it twice a week, and before sleeping, use a comb to straighten it out and let it rest for the night. You keep twirling them initially, and it will never let you down. A true moustache man will never use any product as it harms the hair and according to me the whole point is lost if you do. I’ve kept my moustache for more than three and a half years now and have no plans of trimming it down or shaving it off.

I’m fortunate to have the kind of hair growth that supports a classic handlebar moustache. It adds a lot of character to my face and everyone loves it because it’s rare to get the kind of shape and growth that comes to me naturally. The handlebar should be broad and bushy. I’m not particularly inspired by anyone and believe you should only sport what looks natural on your face instead of trying to fake or create a fashion statement cosmetically. I don’t have to do much to groom it. It takes a few months to grow out and four to five twirls a day are enough. Once it’s reached a proper length, it starts twirling automatically. So touch up just twice a day and you are good to go. Some men who are particular about disobedient moustache hair like to use wax. But I’m not so fussy and don’t use products. I comb it once in the morning and give it the twirl. Do the same thing every time you wash the face or mouth. It takes no more than 10 seconds.’

Bikram Saluja, Actor/director
I usually sport a stubble. Recently I was shooting a documentary in Punjab and most of my assistants were sporting the heavy handlebar moustache. I prefer the simple regular moustache. For me the biggest challenge is to make sure that both sides are even. I’m very particular about that and many times I keep cutting on both sides to get it even and it ends up being too short. Earlier, there were only gels available. Today, there are many light weight products in the market but I haven’t tried them. If you do use products, it’s best to wash it off before you sleep at night. I have noticed that many brands are accepting the moustache in their campaigns. Earlier, brands like Raymonds and others would insist on the clean shaven look.

Facial hair is an extension of who you are as a man. I am an easygoing and laid back sort of a guy, so I guess my moustache is my expression; a part of my persona. I like the kind of style I am currently sporting. It’s free flowing and resembles the look of an eternal traveller. So many legendary men have inspired me over the years. The early influences were Che Guevara, Salvador Dali and even Charlie Chaplin. Their personalities and eccentricity showed through their whiskers. Johnny Depp, Hugh Jackman and Clint Eastwood are a few stars whose style I admire. I also find Jared Leto relatable. I moisturise, shampoo and condition religiously to groom my moustache and also go for a style that works for my face and fits my lifestyle.
